The Argument: “You know, ever since the 60’s, women have been taking men’s jobs, and not because they’re better at it, but just because companies are being forced to be ‘equal.’ So now we have women in the military and police force and fire stations. I mean, come on! Can’t we just have one place where women are not taking our jobs?”
Counterargument 1: This argument sounds like it is based on a deep hurt and/or frustration. These emotions need acknowledging. Men may be hurt or afraid because their jobs in the workplace have been given to women, not because women are better equipped for those jobs, but for the sake of some kind of social justice. This is not right. However, men’s true healing is not found in having a men-only position in church leadership. Only the Lord can heal this kind of hurt. Only the Lord gives value to men for their unique minds, bodies, and skillsets. And only in the Lord can men forgive any injustices done to them in the name of American ‘equality.’
Counterargument 2: This argument sounds as if men had no place where they can work with just-men in the church. No men’s Bible Studies, accountability groups, BBQ’s, game nights, outreaches, etc. It seems valid that men need a place where they can be with only men, but should that place be in church leadership?
Counterargument 3: This argument sounds as if the laws enforcing “equality” in the workplace would be enforced in the church too. However, allowing women into church leadership does not imply that a church would force a certain number of women into leadership to meet a certain quota regardless of if women are willing, able, or qualified. If a church chooses its leaders based on prayer, the Holy Spirit’s leading, and individual’s gifts, then this fear does not seem to be grounded in reality but irrational fear. Again, the Lord can heal irrational fears too.
