We were told by the church via Facebook that singing would be allowed this morning in service. We will only sing two songs, we will have to keep our masks on, and all the sanctuary doors will be open while fans run in the aisles. Imagine this scene on the drive to church and pretend to see COVID molecules flying from people’s masks and into the air around us. They are caught up by the fans and sent across the room until they land on some elderly person who thinks they’re safe sitting in the corner.
Of course, this does not actually happen in church, nor does any congregational singing. The church elders decide last minute that singing is not advisable after all. It is not well with my soul and I am sure that God doesn’t bless America. In fact, the only blessing I eke out of the service occurs partway through the children’s message, I glance behind us and see Dianne and family sitting way in the back once again. however, this time Charlie is with them. Charlie at church! This is unheard of. None of them are wearing masks and of course, this thickens the plot. Dianne is wearing a rather defiant smile on her face when our eyes meet as if she were daring anyone to approach her now that Charlie is with her.
Can’t wait to call up Dianne after church and hear the whole story. Wonder if they’re playing church bingo back there and if they’ve added a new square that says, “Someone telling us to wear masks.”
