Wednesday, May 13, 2020: Am completely overwhelmed by the beauty of spring on my 6 a.m. exercise walk this morning sans kids. No longer walk every day with the children. Instead, alternate days with Steve so that we each have three child-free exercise days a week. On my days, I walk uphill past Paul’s apartments and the children’s school. Then I turn onto Hadley, a wide steep street that takes me into the neighborhood above Whittier College. The old homes up there are perched on the side of a steep hill and look down on the athletic fields and the mustard-covered hills beyond. On Steve’s days, he usually runs the nature trails up Turnbull Canyon and down Hellman’s Trail Park, which spits him out a few blocks from our house. The nature preserve’s gates and parking lot have been locked since COVID, but an 8-foot-tall fence never stops Steve. The other day, Steve ran through Whittier College Campus to see how far he could get before their hyper-vigilant campus safety officer caught him. Steve said he made it all the way to the pool before the golf cart caught him up.
