The best part of cruising with family is, well, cruising with family. There’s someone else to talk to and to film you wiping out on the Flowrider and make sure you don’t get lost in Mexico.
This past April, over Easter vacation, we went on a Royal Caribbean Cruise to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday. She planned and bought tickets way in advance and without her, we never would’ve gone. No seriously, this thing was uber-expensive. So, this is a post to thank my generous mother-in-law and laud all the benefits of cruising with family.
I’m convinced that having other blood-related, sane adults around is the quintessential way to keep oneself sane when vacationing with kids. I know the kids look cute, but they’re actually rather foolish, and they will make us foolish too if we spend too much time with them. Doses of adult conversation are necessary to remind parents that we are the adults, not the children.
The children loved having their cousins, aunt, uncle, and grandparents around to show things to, chat with, and take them around. They even got grandpa to go down a water slide with them! Although, he did bash his elbow up pretty badly doing it.
Cruising with family means additional eyes and ears to help. One night, grandma and grandpa took the children to dinner, so Phil and I could have a date night with Phil’s sister and brother-in-law. We ate in the same dining room as our kids, but on different floors. That was lovely. We got to finish our sentences and eat as slowly as we wanted. Afterwards, we found some comfy couches in a lounge and hid from our kids until pick-up time.
Traveling with family means there are other people like ourselves to talk to about how strange all the other people on the ship are.
Traveling with family helped make this floating city feel a little bit more like home. We’re nothing special, but we’re family. And if other people on the ship give us fishy looks for letting our kids do x, y, or z, at least we’ve got family to still love us.
Thanks, Mom, we wouldn’t have had such a great time without you!

I love this! Such a nice Thank you Note for Gretchen!
Such great reasons for why your cruise was wonderful! Gretchen got her money's worth in relaxing time spent with the family and your sweet appreciation. I'll bet it expresses everyone's feelings!
